Here at the University it is nearly impossible for a skateboarder to ollie a stair set, grind a rail, or do some simple flat-ground tricks without getting into trouble from the Department of Public Safety. According to their policy, since it is a private campus all skateboarders must have all four wheels on the ground at the same time. Hence, NO TRICKS ON CAMPUS!
In between breaking the rules and throwing away Public Safety tickets, many UP skaters are forced to leave campus for their skate sessions.
Beyond campus, the Astor Elementary School on Yale Street provides a nice space for flat-ground practice after school hours. Luckily, we are blessed to have an awesome skatepark just three miles shy from campus on the other side of the St. John’s Neighborhood, Pier Park Skatepark.
However, this park is pretty gnarly. It is not for the beginner skateboarder as it contains 3 bowls varying in size (3ft, 6ft-8ft, and 12-14ft) and a fast paced declining street portion with 3 rails and three hubbas to grind, with a high bank at the end of the park.
So, if this park isn’t for you and you want to skate other parks in PDX or just some awesome local spots, I’ve mapped out my favorite top 10 spots to skate in the city. Get out and get your skate on!
