As a lover of food and the environment I thought I would share this little gem that is, in my opinion the perfect combination of those two things. We all know that Portland is known for being a bike friendly city, so it only makes sense that local companies are taking advantage of this factor. To my astonishment (and delight) there are a growing number of food related businesses that are beginning to deliver their cuisine by bike. Yes, that’s right! Bikes! Instead of polluting the air with toxins, delivery boys are now getting the workout of a lifetime biking all over Portland.
The types of food being ordered in this fashion range from sandwiches to beer and wine. You can even have fresh coffee delivered right to your doorstep! While I am definitely a fan of this concept, I have to wonder how the people delivering the food feel. I know that if I had to bike across town all night bringing customers their orders I would be exhausted. After a few hours of biking I would be so tired that I would become slower and slower until I couldn’t move anymore. This makes me wonder whether these companies hired extra people to deliver products to keep the total customer wait time at a minimum. One of the major points of having food delivered to someone’s home is that it is prepared, fresh and arrives promptly. It is the prompt part that makes me curious. How are companies able to continue delivering in a timely manner when they rely on bicycles? Also, are customers required to tip more because of the physical labor aspect? I am curious to know your opinion on this eco friendly transformation of delivery transportation.
