Everyone knows how popular any Apple products are. And with the increasing number of hacks and theft in the New York area, New York police are beginning to use a strategy teaming up with Apple and creating an iTheft division which enables them to locate stolen products, according to an article by the New York Post. Each product has a unique International Mobile Station Equipment Identity number that will enable personnel to locate it. Once the NYPD learns the number of the phone or iPad, then Apple will help and tell them the location of the stolen product. The hopes of the new division, is to take down some of the nefarious criminal rings that trade in this sort of thing.
This is the first time I’ve heard of Apple being more cooperative with a police department but it was probably very much needed. I think it’s pretty nifty but at the same time I feel like I saw this before as an individual app from the app store. The Find MY iPhone app locates your iPad or iPhone when it is misplaced. This could very much be the same thing that the NYPD is going to be using. The other question is, how long before other areas and police departments begin to add the same divisions a city bus stop.
I believe this new division could be helpful in a way but at the same time, consuming of time and resources of officers and detectives where it could be spent more usefully and appropriately. I think there is a way better solution to this and it is at a more microscopic level. People should just take care of their belongings. Don’t leave them out for everywhere to see, don’t show off your new things for everyone to see and attract unwanted attention. There are going to be thieves everywhere you go it’s a matter of knowing how to take care of yourself.
